St. Jude's School
was founded in 1980.
St. Jude's is a full Special
Education Day School for bright students
experiencing learning difficulties (grades 1 to 8).
St. Jude's School is a temporary alternative to the publicly
funded educational system. Students attend St. Jude's only for as long as they
need to in order to successfully return to the public system. Each student has
his or her unique and individual educational plan
and as such may need St.
Jude's for a number of school years.
St. Jude's classes are very small,
ranging in size from 3 to 7 students. The average size of a class is 5 or 6. The
students are grouped into classes of three levels of instruction - primary,
junior and intermediate. The classes must remain very small so that each
student's unique and individual learning styles can be maximized. implemented.
St. Jude's teachers have been carefully
chosen. They are, first and foremost, individuals who have become teachers not
because its a job but because it is their vocation. They are caring and
nurturing individuals who have special skills particularly suited to teaching
students who struggle with the acquisition of reading and writing. Even though
each teacher comes to St. Jude's with his/her own expertise, upon joining the
staff he/she begins to benefit from each child in their care. Each student will
further broaden and enrich that teacher's understanding of learning.
St. Jude's instructional program is as
diverse and unique as its students. St. Jude's does not subscribe it any one
particular instructional methodology. St. Jude's considers each student as
having their own particular learning needs and as a result tries to adapt to the
child's style rather than to impose a pre-packaged remedial strategy. This
allows St. Jude's to be flexible, to adjust according to the student's learning
changes and to work towards the day when a return into the publicly funded
system will be possible. This approach requires constant evaluations of
student's academic progress and frequent communication with the parents.
The academic program at St. Jude's focuses on communication - the ability to to
use skills to transmit knowledge and understanding. The important skills of
reading, comprehension, expressive writing and mathematics receive a much
greater emphasis at St. Jude's than is provided in the publicly funded system. Parents recognize that a good learner must have, first,
an excellent
foundation in the basic academic skills of Reading, Spelling, Mathematics, and Writing; second,
an established work
ethic of homework completion, note making skills, project and assignment
completion, and effective study skills; and finally, these students must have a
teacher ready, willing and able to provide the help, guidance, and instruction necessary
for their child to achieve and
compete
to the best of their ability.
St. Jude's School accepts and continues to educate
students who have a genuine and sincere desire to learn combined with a daily
willingness to work with his/her teachers. Student respect for teachers and the
rules of the school are expected and required. Students who persistently
demonstrate inappropriate behaviour and who fail to permanently learn to comply
with the expectations of the St. Jude's Code of Behaviour will be removed
from the school. Students with emotional and/or behavioural issues will not be
accepted into St. Jude's School.
